Private Detectives Crack Down on Illegal Transportation in Ibiza
Ibiza’s fight against illegal transportation took a bold turn as private detectives infiltrated rogue transport networks across the island. In collaboration with local authorities and the Consell Insular de Ibiza, these covert agents uncovered serious violations in a groundbreaking three-day operation.
Detectives Infiltrate Illegal Transport Networks
For the first time, private detectives became part of an Ibiza-wide effort to clamp down on illegal transportation services. Disguised as passengers, they secretly hired unregulated taxi services and illegal VTC drivers. With real-time updates sent to law enforcement, they guided police and inspectors straight to offenders. This approach proved highly effective, surprising many illegal operators.

Roberto Algaba, Ibiza’s Director of Transport, emphasized the importance of this operation. He stated, “The element of surprise ensured that offenders had no chance to evade detection.” Traditional road checkpoints were insufficient, as drivers often found ways to avoid them. This new strategy added a new layer of unpredictability.
Operation Results and Future Plans
Over the course of the operation, 19 drivers were charged with various violations. Among those, nine were pirate taxi drivers, seven were illegal VTCs, and two legal taxis were fined for improper passenger loading procedures. One driver even tested positive for drugs, although the passengers refused to cooperate.
The Consell de Ibiza is now considering making the use of private detectives a permanent fixture in its ongoing transport enforcement. This follows an increase in fines collected from illegal operators, which reached nearly €500,000 in 2023—36% more than the previous year.

This collaboration between detectives, police, and transport inspectors marks a significant step toward cleaning up Ibiza’s passenger transport industry. With tighter controls expected in the coming seasons, authorities are hopeful that illegal operators will think twice before violating transport laws.
