New Strategy to Combat Excess Tourism in Ibiza: A Collaborative Approach
In recent years, excess tourism has strained resources and disrupted tranquility in Ibiza. The regional Ministry of Tourism and the Consell d’Eivissa now seek to tackle this problem with a crash plan. This strategy involves various stakeholders, including local authorities, security forces, and health and commerce officials.
A Collaborative Effort
Balearic Minister of Tourism, Jaume Bauzà, and insular president, Vicent Marí, announced the plan recently. It will remain in effect until the government approves modifications to the previous decree against excess tourism. This initiative shows a renewed commitment to addressing overcrowding on the island, with multiple ministries and local authorities involved.
Vicent Marí underscored that Ibiza does not welcome excess tourism. To prove it, the authorities are determined to take concrete steps. The crash plan involves the participation of the Ministries of Tourism, Health, Consumption, and Commerce, along with the Consell d’Eivissa, security forces, and other relevant bodies. This plan aims to tackle the issue from various angles, with a focus on problematic areas.
Inspections and Enforcement
Inspections are a key component of the plan. Marí emphasized that these will occur across the island. They will focus more on areas particularly affected by excess tourism. The goal is to identify and rectify issues contributing to overcrowding.
Besides inspections, the plan aims to deter potential offenders by increasing control presence. Marí explained that they will pursue actions causing coexistence issues and damaging the island’s image. Increased enforcement and visibility should discourage activities contributing to excess tourism.
Government Support
Minister Bauzà expressed full support for the Consell d’Eivissa’s efforts against excess tourism. He stated that they would strive to implement the crash plan immediately. While the previous decree against excess tourism lacked local support, the current situation is different. Both the Government and the Consell, now governed by the PP, should find it easier to reach agreements concerning this regulation.
Bauzà revealed that the crash plan would remain in effect while the government prepares modifications to the decree against excess tourism. The earlier decree, backed by the socialist Francina Armengol’s Executive, did not have the support of the Ibizan administrations or business owners. However, both the Government and the Consell now agree that the fight against excess tourism must be a constant effort.
Conclusion
Ibiza’s new crash plan against excess tourism is a collaborative effort between the regional Ministry of Tourism, Consell d’Eivissa, and other key stakeholders. It aims to address the issue of overcrowding on the island through inspections, enforcement, and government support. With a unified approach, the authorities are determined to tackle excess tourism and preserve the unique charm of Ibiza for both residents and visitors.
