Ibiza Port’s Plant-Generated Energy Lights Up Gardens
Ibiza Port is pioneering sustainable energy by illuminating its gardens with electricity generated from plants. This innovative project showcases how biotechnology can transform natural resources into clean energy.
Harnessing Plant Power at Ibiza Port
The port has launched a groundbreaking pilot project in collaboration with Bioo and the Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB). By utilising microorganisms in the soil, they generate electricity to power ten garden lights near the Botafoc children’s park. This initiative highlights Ibiza Port’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
How Does the Plant-Generated Energy Work?
Biotechnology at Its Best
Special biotechnological panels installed in the soil convert organic matter into electricity. As plants undergo natural decomposition, microorganisms break down organic compounds, releasing electrons. These electrons are captured to produce a continuous flow of energy.
Benefits of the System
The plant-generated energy system produces 23.8 Wh of clean energy around the clock. It reduces CO₂ emissions by 804 kilograms annually, saves 109,000 litres of water, and lowers the local temperature by 4.8 °C. Ibiza Port’s plant-generated energy not only lights up the gardens but also contributes to environmental conservation.
Ibiza Port Leading in Sustainability
Employment and Innovation
The project began in August and took two months to implement, providing direct employment for fourteen people. Ibiza Port’s plant-generated energy initiative sets a precedent for other ports in the archipelago to adopt similar sustainable practices.

Future Developments
The APB is also involved in European projects like OPS for electrifying docks and the Eiffel project for installing air pollution sensors. In Palma, a hydrogen fuel cell is part of the Green Hysland programme, aiming for a greener economy.
Ibiza Port’s plant-generated energy project is a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions in port infrastructures. By harnessing the power of plants, the port is leading the way in environmental innovation and setting an example for others to follow.
