A Step Towards Sustainable Tourism
According to Vicent Marí, President of the Consell d’Eivissa, this law addresses social and environmental challenges resulting from Ibiza’s tourism success. “We face new challenges that demand we work towards an essential balance between tourism and residents’ quality of life,” Marí stated.
Key Provisions of the New Law
The legislation provides legal tools to limit rental cars, caravans, and motorhomes entering the island.
- Creation of a Mobility Consortium: Aims to manage transportation effectively.
- Applies to All Vehicle Types: Ensures comprehensive control over vehicle entry.
- Implementation from June 2025: Allows gradual adaptation to new regulations.
Political Reactions
The Socialist Party views the law as a positive step but calls for more measures to achieve necessary “de-growth” in the islands. Deputy Pilar Costa emphasised eliminating 9,000 frozen tourist places and reducing existing ones. She also stressed the importance of keeping the Port of Sant Antoni free from commercial activity.

However, VOX opposed the law, viewing it as an attack on citizens’ freedoms. Deputy Patricia de las Heras accused the People’s Party (PP) of adopting a “tourism-phobic” stance, calling the measures characteristic of a totalitarian regime.
