Tourism officials are promoting the campaign again this year as the tourist season begins. The campaign originally started in 2019. A total of 28 beaches in the Balearic Islands are participating in the program this year, including five in Ibiza. These beaches are es Bol Nou, ses Salines, es Cavallet (in the Natural Park), Platges de Comte (Sant Josep de sa Talaia), and es Caló des Moro (Sant Antoni).

Smoking banned at popular Ibiza beaches

Last year, Sant Josep made four beaches smoke-free: ses Salines, es Cavallet, es Bol Nou, and Platges de Comte. Cala d’Hort is now completely smoke-free to keep the beach clean.

The program aims to raise awareness of the dangers cigarette butts pose to the environment and the health risks associated with smoking. The Directorate General of Public Health and Participation reminds us that tobacco consumption is “one of the leading causes of preventable illness and death worldwide.”

In addition, tobacco waste “contains more than 7,000 toxic chemicals that poison the environment. According to the Directorate General, cigarette butts are the waste most commonly found among marine debris.

QR codes and banners to promote smoke free beaches

Participating municipalities can place a 4-meter banner on each beach and provide QR codes on informative stickers to make it easier for people to identify and promote smoke-free beaches. The Directorate General of Public Health and Participation believes that smoke-free beaches encourage individual responsibility and civic-mindedness, creating a healthier environment for families to enjoy together.

Smoke-free beaches are increasingly being viewed as a family-friendly tourist attraction. The program’s website provides a list of participating beaches, and municipalities interested in joining the initiative can apply through the Directorate’s website and promote it on their website.
