British Family’s Nightmare: Squatters in Ibiza Take Over Their Holiday Home
A British family’s Spanish holiday in Ibiza took a turn for the worse when they arrived at their San Antonio vacation home to discover squatters had moved in and changed the locks. The Robinson family, whose patriarch Marc Robinson serves as the head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) Extradition Unit in the UK, found themselves in the middle of an unexpected legal battle.
Upon arriving at the property on April 4th, the Robinsons were shocked to find strangers occupying their home. The police were called, and they discovered a man who admitted to squatting with his wife and two children, claiming they had nowhere else to live. Neighbors reported seeing at least four other men in the garden after the officers left.
The family has since filed two separate complaints with a local court in an attempt to recover their property. However, the legal process has been slow, and the lawsuit against the squatters has yet to be admitted for processing. The police report has not reached the court, and preliminary eviction proceedings have not been opened.
Hands Tied
The Civil Guard informed the Robinsons that they could not evict the squatters in Ibiza without a court order, as the occupants claimed to be a family with no other place to live. Spain is notorious for its slow eviction process, often leaving property owners vulnerable and with little protection against squatters. Cases can take over a year to resolve, and many homeowners resort to hiring private firms or offering cash to the squatters in order to regain control of their property.
Frustration
Marc Robinson, with over 17 years of legal experience dealing with serious cases, has expressed frustration with the situation and urged the Spanish government to provide better protection for property owners. He also advises anyone owning property in Spain to be aware of the risks and prepared to take legal action if necessary.
The ordeal faced by the Robinson family highlights the challenges and complexities of evicting squatters in Ibiza. With their Ibiza holiday ruined and an ongoing legal battle, they hope their experience will serve as a cautionary tale for other property owners in the country.
