Balearic Population Grows 50% in 25 Years Due to Foreign Residents
The Balearic Population on the Islands have seen a significant increase in foreign residents in the past 25 years. The number has grown from 32,102 in 1996 to 222,017 on 1 January 2022. The increase in the number of foreigners living in the Balearics has been six times more than the growth of the total population. All the islands have seen a rise in foreign residents, with Minorca, Ibiza, Formentera, and Mallorca being the most affected.
The increase in the number of foreign residents has led to a notable increase in new residents in all municipalities, with a shift towards more rural areas. The city of Palma has seen a significant rise in foreign residents, with the number increasing from just over 6,000 to over 60,000 in the past 25 years.
The Balearic population is becoming more diverse, with a rise in South American and African immigrants. The majority of foreigners on the islands are no longer German, as they were a few years ago, but Moroccan. The rise in foreign residents has led to many moving to the Balearic Islands for work, in addition to buying a second holiday home. The Balearic Islands have become a melting pot of cultures, with an increase in diversity and foreign residents moving to more rural areas.
