In the past 24 hours, authorities in Ibiza, Formentera, and Mallorca have intercepted 238 migrants attempting to reach the Balearic Islands. This spike highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the region in managing migrant flows across the Mediterranean Sea.
Rising Numbers in 2024
Significant Increase from Previous Year
Compared to 2023, this year, the Balearic Islands migrant arrivals have surged by over 70%. Last year, 128 vessels brought 2,278 migrants to the islands, whereas this year, more than 4,102 individuals have arrived via 251 pateras.
Recent Interceptions and Rescue Operations
Salvamento Marítimo and the Guardia Civil have played pivotal roles in these efforts. On Tuesday alone, they located 15 pateras carrying a total of 238 migrants. Notably, at 17:15 hours, a patera with nine migrants was intercepted in Es Migjorn, Formentera. Later, 18 individuals were rescued near Cap Llebeig, Cabrera, south of Mallorca.
Community and Security Responses
Local authorities have intensified patrols. For instance, at 20:15 hours, ten migrants were intercepted in Sa Rápita, Mallorca. Additionally, 13 migrants were found in La Mola, Formentera, and another 17 were rescued near Santa Ponça, southwest of Mallorca.

Enhanced Monitoring and Coordination
The Government Delegation has notified six additional vessels recently, bringing the day’s total to fifteen interceptions. This coordinated effort underscores the commitment to safeguarding both migrants and coastal communities.
